Rui Frati – Theatre of the Oppressed

Sociologist, actor, director, and head of the Theatre of the Oppressed, Rui Frati brings to Funchal a Forum Theatre Master Class, essential work of Augusto Boal’s oeuvre and life.

With multiple projects carried out from Burundi to Brazil, from Palestine to Portugal, from Iran to Morocco, Rui Frati has an experience in Forum Theatre, as an actor, director, and author, that is difficult to match.

Working with Forum Theatre as a transformative instrument of social, pedagogical, and therapeutic intervention, Rui Frati has already worked in various contexts, from penitentiaries to schools, from remote villages in the Amazon to Iran with its artistically repressive regime.

Navigating cultural and political sensitivities, he uses Forum Theatre as a means of cultural expansion and struggle for the advancement of human rights, with projects for social reintegration of former prisoners, reduction and fight against delinquency and violence and sexual aggression; fight against domestic violence, among multiple other pivotal interventions in any society.

In a unique Master Class, Rui Frati brings a singular technique of theatre and social intervention, as well as techniques for argument construction, representation, and intervention.
